English Language Challenges

    In English laboratories where we have to write about our opinions and experiences of different topics that the professor gives us, creating a blog. I consider it a good instance to practice our writing in English, learn verb tenses and also practice our reading when reading the blogs of the other students of the course.

I think I have to improve many aspects in my English for example I must expand my vocabulary and specifically I have to practice a lot of pronunciation of the words since it is the most difficult for me. I plan to improve my pronunciation by downloading applications on the cell phone where they teach me to pronounce the words and also watching movies with subtitles in English in order to learn the meaning of the words and at the same time the pronunciation of them. the true, I have known that many people have learned a lot about English in this way, and now they handle themselves very well in English .

Outside the English class I use a lot of English as for example in other branches of the career, in addition this semester I joined a research unit in the neuroplasticity laboratory, where I have to read many papers and documents in English about different discoveries and research of which I must be aware and to do a good job in the laboratory

In general in day to day, English is an impregnable tool since it is the language that all users use for work and in the communication, I thinks everyone should have the opportunity to learn English

Changes to my study programme

Today I have to talk about the changes that may be present in my study program. To begin with I will first talk about those changes that in my opinion should be made in my study program. Therefore, the first change that in my opinion is necessary is a change in relation to the workload and lengh of studies. I study chemistry and pharmacy, as some will know (those who study this career) the University of Chile, it create pharmaceutical chemical professionals who are capable of performing in many areas, such as: industrial area or laboratory (very related to management tasks ), regulatory area (closely related to laws and decrees governing pharmaceutical products), community or private pharmacy area (it is also related to management and control tasks), clinical area (closely related to direct work with the patient and the interaction of the drugs with them), we also have areas in police investigations, areas in blood bank, areas of research, areas in analytical work. In summary, we can conclude that many of these areas require very different abilities from each other. For this reason, the University of Chile, it prepares you to be able to perform all these activities. Obviously, one is always more interested in an area, therefore, in my opinion I do not find it so important to learn other skills that in our field never will apply. So, in my opinion, the change in my program of studies could be the choice to take specialties early (for example, in the second or third year of career), with this the workload and the duration of studies would be lower.

I also think about the changes that will be happening in my career, as well as those that are already happening: (buildings and infrastructure) that will allow us to have more laboratories and rooms. Also those changes that are happening in our chemistry and pharmacy study program, since my generation is currently witnessing a change in teaching methods when applying a new program.

Well ... I hope all these changes are for the benefit of all of us.

In my opinion

What is your opinion about women in the military?

1) Women and the army, a subject that is pretty much in debate since for some people they consider that being a military is a male profession. In my opinion it is something that has no relation to sex and that both men and women can be military. Women have the right to participate in the army and to enter combat, in addition, they should have the same possibilities of hierarchical progress as men.

What is your opinion about the legalization of abortion in the 3 cases?

2) Another question that a long time ago generates a lot of debate: abortion. I must say that on this subject I have been in ideas that are in favor of the legalization of abortion and others against it. However, I am more inclined towards the legalization of abortion. I am in favor of these important points: when the life of the baby or the woman is very compromised or when the pregnancy is the product of a violation. However, with regard to other ideas I am against, such as: "Abortion must be legal because women have the right to decide about their own bodies". There are times when I consider that the decision to have a baby is something of the mother and also the father. Suppose the following case: a wedding couple who decided to have a baby, but a few months after becoming pregnant, the mother decides to have an abortion because she had an argument with her boyfriend and now she decide to have an abortion. Here comes my opinion against: if the boyfriend wants to stay with the baby despite the divorce, the woman should not have an abortion even though she is the owner of her own body.

What is your opinion about legalizing marijuana and other drugs?

3) In relation to marijuana, a drug so powerful that it has many effects which have no biological explanation as well as many undiscovered effects. In my opinion, marijuana should be legalized only for clinical use under the prescription of a professional, given that there is still much to be clarified about this drug, since if we search the internet we will realize that there are many beneficial or harmful effects that have not been checked yet.

What is your opinion about climate change?

4) Climate Change is not a thing of today, nor of yesterday nor of the day before yesterday; is a consequence caused for many years, which is mainly due to the human being due to: massive pollution of rivers and seas, the aggressive emission of gases such as CO2 and many more to the atmosphere. These factors and many more have caused the global warming to occur, thus causing climate change. As we all know, it is something very important that generates many consequences. For this reason I think the important thing is to have a lot of information on the subject and want to contribute our small but essential grain of sand. The first step is to change many of our daily habits that harm the environment.

From cartoons, animes to TV series

Well, I'm not a big fan of cartoons or TV series.However, I have certain cartoons or TV series that I find very entertaining to see them occasionally. As for example: the Simpsons, a cartoons that without a doubt everyone knows them. As I said I only see it occasionally when it's tuned into the "fox channel". Other cartoons that I see, due my girlfriend sees them, is "Gravity falls" .These cartoons are about the adventures of two brothers during the holidays in the house of his uncle Stan. Perhaps for some they are very childish, but in reality they are quite entertaining. I see this series almost every Saturday morning, when we just woke up with my girlfriend before breakfast. Other cartoons that I really like and that when I have time I see them, it's Avatar. A anime from the nickelodeon channel. In fact, it is no longer in nickelodeon and you can only see it on the internet or Netflix.

Although I have cartoons that I consider "my favorites", I do not consider myself a fan of those since I only see them occasionally.            

For me the anime does not have any importance, I really prefer movies that anime or cartoons. My friends also prefer the movies, because of this we never talk about cartoons.

Thinking well, maybe if I had the time to watch TV series or cartoons, I would see them more frequently and maybe I would be a fan of this. But since the University demands a lot of time, I'm just a ocassionally watcher.

Post graduate studies

I have thought of two postgraduate courses: a post-tittle in clinical pharmacy or, if all goes well, a doctorate (PH. D.) in pharmacology. Both to give a clinical approach, thought about the care and treatment of the patient. Being able to apply and relate the basic component of chemistry science health, to achieve good development in fields of cardiology, infectious diseases, nephrology, gastroenterology, oncology and care, emergencies, among others. In addition, I would like to have strong knowledge in pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology, interpretation of laboratory tests, clinical pharmacokinetics, patient education and health. These studies I would like to carry out in Chile, since I am not a person to study or live abroad, although if for those opportunities of life I receive some offer of studies abroad, I would probably accede. These courses I would like to take part-time, in order to have time to work and study at the same time.

I have also thought about dedicating myself to teaching, I have considered enough the possibility of practicing as a professor in some university, since I am the kind of person who likes to teach. In fact, I have taken assistantship courses in areas that are of my interest as physiology.

Probably, I will end up studying and practicing both approaches, and in some way perform them in a related way. That is to say, first to continue my studies with a focus on clinical pharmacy, then at my oldest age and once I have had enough experience, to dedicate myself as a teacher.

Your New Job

What kind of job would you like to have? This is a great question that I have always asked myself, because to this day I do not know what to do when I leave this career. Within all the careers that I can choose, we have: private or community pharmacy, hospital area, laboratory .... And other less common such as work in regulatory area or work with the Investigation Police (PDI).


Although I am not clear about my plan for the future, I have certain ideas about my professional future. I have thought about working in what is called clinical area or clinical pharmacy. This is a new field in the field of pharmacy in Chile, although that is not unimportant. The specialists in this area are able to participate actively with a health team, working closely with the purpose of improving the patient's health conditions. Here the pharmacist along with other professionals must detect, prevent and solve problems related to medications, which hinder the achievement of optimal treatment results.


I know it is a job that requires a lot of dedication, as well as a constant study on the health of people. Nor do I know about the current salary of this work (I know it is not little), but it is an area that catches my attention. This is why I am becoming more committed to my career. Also, I know that if I want to dedicate myself to this in the future, I should continue my study with doctorates or diploma courses. It is a difficult goal but not unattainable.

microRNA: a compromising tool

Although what I am going to tell you is not a technical, instrument or material as such, but rather an interesting and small (but powerful) pharmaceutical weapon. First I will tell you about the microRNA (miRNA), these are small nucleotide sequences of non-coding RNA, that is, they do not synthesize proteins. Before, the scientists did not know very well the functions that these small fragments had in our organism, today it is known that they act as small machines for the regulation of gene expression, that is, they regulate the synthesis of proteins in cells.

Thanks to the study and new discoveries about these RNAs, the usefulness of these sequences in new gene therapies is being analyzed and evaluated to cure diseases caused by the abnormal expression of certain genes (such as viral, carcinogenic or other diseases).

It is of high importance in my career because it implies a compromising future in areas of research.

I chose this topic because it is something new, interesting and above all, it is something very curious for me.

I learned about this topic not long ago. It was in a couple of months ago, when the teacher told us about these sequences and their pharmaceutical utility.

It has a great impact in the field of health. Since it could be used to cure or treat diseases that today have no cure.

While it has a lot of advantages, if these sequences are not highly specific, they can cause serious illnesses in our body. For example, proteins of tumor cell suppressors can be inhibited.

About pets, love and friendship

My unique and favorite pet is my dog named Jack. It is a small dog but a bit fat. It is black with brown spots. If I mention its form, you would guess its dog breed quickly since it is easy to identify. It is a small dog, with small legs in relation to the size of its body. It also has the shape of a sausage.
Indeed, my dog Jack is of the breed called teckel (in Spanish) or dachshund.

I have my dog since my dad gave it to my sister, since then we all have a great affection to our dog.
What I like most about it, is that he will always be by your side. He is also a very obedient dog. In addition, I like its funny shape, which makes it walk in a very funny way.

This shape is due to a genetic mutation called bassetism or canine achondroplasia. Achondroplasia (dwarfism) is a bone condition where bones do not grow at the expected average size of the breed. The result is abnormally short legs, or the condition of dwarfism.

The best holiday

I will tell you about my memorable holiday, which happened last year during my winter holidays. I choose these holidays because they have great sentimental value.

In winter season, to celebrate our 1 year relationship, my girlfriend and me, we went to olmue. Where we stayed in a great and beautiful cabin. In this place you can do it many activities, you can go to the heated pool and jacuzzi, to the massage center, to the activities around the campfire, and make bread kneading hahaha. We also had the opportunity to ride a bike and on horseback. We did trekking.
We did many things. It was a great opportunity this trip. We put all our savings to spend a great time together and stay with nice memories.

Currently, the two years of relationship have passed and we decided not to travel to save money, because for summer vacations we have planned to travel by plane out of the country. That has me very exciting, the only problem is to get all the money hahaha.

A country I would like to visit

I would very much like to go to London, but only on vacation. Actually I would not like to live in another country, either for work or study, since I am a person who likes to be surrounded by friends and family.

London is a heterogeneous and fascinating city with some of the best tourist places and attractions in the world. There is so much to do that it is difficult to travel all the activities that London offers, its museums and monuments, to make excursions, to take boat trips, to visit the great parks and all the architecture that this enormous city delivers.
London is the capital and the city of England and the United Kingdom. This country, which was founded by the Romans, still conserves areas with a medieval atmosphere. It is considered a global city, for the great power in the field of arts, commerce, education, entertainment, finance, research, tourism and transport.

What most impresses me about this country is the large number of tourist sites offered, for example: the Tower of London, the House of Somerset, Hyde Park or Richmond Park, Chelsea Stadium, the London Eye, its beautiful churchs, the buckingham palace and the large number of museums.





If I had enough money I would like to visit the vast majority of its attraccions, but without hesitation, I would like to get into the London Eye. The view a must be beautiful, considering all the buildings of city.

EVALUATION OF MY BLOGGING EXPERIENCE

My opinion of the activities of this course ... first I said that I was very much in agreement with the opinion of the teacher ... the results obtained from the students depend on the commitment that the students have in the university subject. I will not deny it, my commitment for the subject was not 100%. Therefore, if I had put more commitment, my results had been better. However, it is not that I want to have an excuse, but in my opinion: this semester (for me) was a very difficult semester with a lot of load and stress. It could be said that if I had more time, I had put more commitment to this subject, since one of my goals is to learn English.

In relation to my writing skills, it could be said that they have improved. It is not that I write without problem, but I have had an improvement. Even if my commit and my available time were greater, my skills will improve even more.

In the future, it will include an activity to replace the blogs. This activity consists of making videos of 5 or 10 minutes, where the students must record themselves talking with any person (friend, relative, companion, etc.). Perhaps the results are best that with the blogs.

Even so, the topics of the blogs are fine, I could say that the topics should be of free choice, but if so, I would not have the imagination to make a blog.

FAVOURITE SERIES, MOVIE OR BOOK

What is my favorite book, series or movie?

It's a difficult question to answer for me, since I'm not a fan of books, movies or series. I am not one of the people who are always reading a book. With respect to the TV series, I have seen some but I never finish seeing its end. And about the movies, I do not have a favorite. However, the best movies I've seen are the "Avengers" movies. Each one of them, they are fantastic. In general, all marvel movies are good movies. The first "Avengers" movie was in 2012, it was written and directed by Joss Whedon. This American superhero movie is part of the marvel movie universe, which links several films, such as "Iron Man", the incredible "Hulk", "Thor" and "Captain America". In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization known as SHIELD, recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to form a team. The group must stop Thor's brother, Loki, to prevent the destruction of the planet. I like this movie because it contains a lot of action, plot and special effects that keep me watching the whole movie.

A SUBJECT YOU ENJOY STUDYING THIS SEMESTER

Hello dear readers, today I have to write something that for many is stressful: university subjects. Especially I will talk about my favorite subjetc and the reason why I chose it.

This is Pharmacology, I chose this subject because it is one of the first subject most linked to my career, since most of the subject I have had do not have much relation (in my opinion), except for some. Pharmacology is a complicated field, where you must have a good memory since it has many contents. For me and many companion, we consider the tests of this subject very difficult, we all have the fear of not passing the subject hahaha.

In classes, we have seen various introductory contents to make way for the world of pharmacy. In class we begin with the pharmacokinetic processes that most drugs undergo: absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion. In addition, we have seen the classification of pharmaceutical forms: enteral, parenteral and topical. We have learned to know and identify the stages of a clinical trial and many other things. In short, it is a difficult but interesting field. In the future I would like to be an assistant in this subject.

AN EXPERT ON YOUR FIELD

The truth is I'm not sure which person of my field I admire. However, I think a good example to follow Professor Jenniffer Ávalos. Maybe many do not know her, but I assure you that you will know her and also admire her as I do.

In 2005, she entered the career of chemistry and pharmacy in the faculty of chemical and pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Chile. In 2011 she entered the PhD program in Pharmacology at the same faculty. In 2015 she won the "for Women in science" award for her outstanding research studies and contributions to the world of science.

Currently she is dedicated to teaching and mainly to studies with cancer cells. Nowadays, she is taking a post doctorate at the Catholic University. I chose her because it is a model to follow. I like the way in which she teaches, in fact, because of her, I was interested in dedicating myself to teaching. The day you meet her, you will remember me. I do not know someone who does not like Professor Jenniffer Avalos.

FAVOURITE PICTURE

I consider myself an amateur of photography, I really like to take pictures, especially of nature and landscape, also I like to take pictures of people. I am not good at taking picture to myself because I don’t like selfies, but for other people I like to take pictures of them. In addition to taking pictures, I like to edit them. Here there is a picture taken by me. 

This picture was taken two days ago in "Embalse el Yeso". It shows an abandoned house and behind it a beautiful landscape. I like this picture too much because I liked the editing that I did myself.

I spend a lot of time watching videos of how to edit photos using various applications. While I like to take pictures, I do not have a good camera. In fact, most of my photos were made with the camera phone, even so I took good pictures.

MUSIC - FAVOURITE GENRE/MUSICIAN

It is difficult to select a genre of music, because it depends a lot on the environment or mood in which I find myself. For example, if I want to study I prefer classical music and if I'm with my friends I prefer reggaeton or pop. Sometimes I prefer to listen to rap or other times reggae. My style of music is very varied. However, if among all genres I should choose a type of music, it would be the electronic, because this type of music fills me with energy and also, is the only genre of music that forces me to spend money to go to concerts.

This genre began to like me since that my dad put his cd's of electronics when I was a child haha
There are great musicians or better said dj of this genre, such as: GTA, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Martin Garrix, Steve Aoki, Calvin Harris, Hardwell, W&W, Don Diablo and so, could continue to name unfinished. I think the Dj's that I like the most they are Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, which have many incredible songs.

MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY

The photographic camera it's an apparatus in which you can capture moments forever, there are two analogous and digital types. Analog cameras use rolls and those rolls should be revealed in a special place to get the photos unlike the digital cameras the photos can be obtained directly if you download them to a computer.

 when I was 13 years old I got my first camera and I have changed it over the years. Where I use it most normally is in the holidays because I like to take my family pictures and also taking pictures to the beautiful landscapes of the places I visited.

  I love carry my camera everywhere and taking pictures to all persons and of everything, thus I keep memories of all the years, that many persons many will see when many years have passed. I would hate to lose it or not be able to use it because I would miss valuable moments that I keep in photographs year after year.

WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS PROGRAMME?

When I was a child I liked drawing and crafts a lot, for this reason I was interested in studying architecture. But, when I entered to highschool I realized that my skill and what I really liked were the chemistry and maths. Then, I had two options in mind, study chemistry and pharmacy or engineering in chemistry. Finally, I decided to study chemistry and pharmacy, because I became interested in health. The chemistry and pharmacy career have the two areas than most I like which are the area of health and the chemistry.

Since I entered the university, I increasingly like the career and its fields of work. an area that interests me a lot, is the clinic pharmacy. I am very interested in the participation that the pharmaceutical chemist can have in a hospital, together a multidisciplinary team of professionals

MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Hi partners, mi name is Fabian, I am 21 years old. I was born in Santiago, although I dont remember the hospital. When I was child, I studied in the Elementary school “Ecole Noel”. This school are in the san miguel district, before that I studied in liceo Barros Manuel Borgoño in high school, at the present I am studying chemitry and pharmacy  in universidad de chile .

I live with my mom and my sister and my girlfried. We are a beautifull family.

I like go to gym in my university and besides, i like meeting with my Friends every Friday. I like going to the cinema with my girlfriend,  we are a very movie fanatics, all types of movies except horror movies, because my girlfriend dont like it (yes, she so boring jaja but i love her).
